About Grandpa's Rocks...

My grandpa used to collect rocks. Here he is in his trusty camper, probably off on a rock hunt somewhere. He took trips to Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, California and I'm not sure where else looking for rocks and fossils. These rocks have ended up, over the years, tucked away in buckets and barrels in the garage, moved from one place to another, and sometimes even buried in the back yard.

My great grandfather collected rocks also, and some of the collection in the garage and yard are probably his, but I didn't want to call this blog "Grandpa and Great Grandpa's Rocks" though it would be fitting, because it's just too long a name. So it's just "Grandpa's Rocks" but it's about both grandpas. My great grandfather has long since gone from this earth and my grandfather has passed on now, too. To honor them, and out of genuine curiousity and interest in the subject, I've taken it upon myself to learn more about this hobby of theirs.

I've been digging up and collecting the rocks from the yard and the garage, cleaning them up, and I have scanned and taken pictures of some. I'll be trying to find out more about them as I go along. I'm a teacher so I first got excited about the fossils I found, knowing that I can use them to teach and lead into that most engaging of subjects: DINOSAURS. But the rocks and minerals are great teaching tools as well. I may join local rockhound groups in order to get help identifying the rocks I have found. I'm also going to post some of the pictures I've taken, and if anyone knows more about the rocks in the pictures, please feel free to comment.

I guess I need a better camera to get good close-ups. For now, please excuse the poor quality of the non-scanned pictures. I will get a special camera eventually.
